Planning a kitchen remodel involves more than changing cabinets, replacing countertops and buying shiny new appliances. A professional kitchen remodeling contractor will tell you how you can increase the efficiency of your kitchen through proper placement and position of your sink, stove and refrigerator. Besides, if you are currently stuck with a kitchen design plan that doesn't suit your space limitations, then a kitchen remodel will involve the altering the layout of your kitchen. For instance, if you have a kitchen that's elongated in shape, a galley design will offer maximum efficiency and space saving. An L or U shaped kitchen is best suited for rectangular or square kitchens. As long as you are investing a considerable amount of money on remodeling your kitchen, it's advisable to go one step further, and change the entire layout of your kitchen, so it becomes a place to enjoy cooking.
Once you have the kitchen layout in place, your kitchen remodel contractor will suggest the best cabinet designs for countertop materials and floors for your new kitchen. Cabinets should preferably be in lighter colors to help make a small kitchen appear large. If you are lucky enough to have a big kitchen, then deep and warm cabinet colors will make your kitchen seem cozy and welcoming. Another way to warm up your kitchen is to coordinate the cabinet colors with the color on your floors. No matter what your current countertop material, it's likely to have taken some amount of abuse over the years. The new soapstone and silestone countertops are sturdy, and come in a variety of colors to match your color scheme.
Your kitchen remodeling contractor will also suggest the right kind of flooring for your kitchen. Generally, home owners tend to go with vinyl or wood. If you are leaning towards tile, know that the floors can get really cold during winter. Discuss your kitchen design plans with your kitchen remodeling contractor. Factor in sufficient walking space around your dining area. Also, define power outlets, the position of the stove, sink and refrigerator. This will ensure that your new kitchen is not only creative in design, but also functional.
